It is normal for children to get bored. This boredom gives rise to creativity and ideas. If the little ones have a hard time finding something to do, then  parents can help them by coming up with homemade activities that can be fun for everyone. How about making games with paper and pencil? They are sure to be entertaining!

Usually we play board games, watch movies or spend time playing on video consoles… However, playing with paper and pencil can help the whole family have fun together, while also stimulating children’s skills in reasoning.

Play with paper and pencil for younger children

Now that you have a lot more time to get bored, you may be running out of ideas. Therefore, these games can surely get you out of more than one predicament.

Of course, you need to keep in mind that you need to select and  customize these games according to your children’s age and abilities. 

Connect the dots

This game is a lot of fun, and it also helps with skills in reasoning. Even if you are not good at drawing, you will certainly be able to do some simple activities where you have to connect the dots, such as an orange, a fish, a bear, etc.

You just have to make a drawing by making a series of numbered points. When your children connect these dots with a pencil or felt-tip pen, they will see the figure appear.

Tip:  you can first draw the figure very gently with a pencil and then whisper the lines once you have marked and numbered the dots. 

Your children will need to connect the numbered points with lines until they form the outline of the drawing. They will love this play because of the excitement that will arise when the figure emerges through the numbered dots.

Doctor with paper and pencil: The funny monster

This play will show your children’s creativity, and moreover, it is an easy activity. All you have to do is take turns drawing on a piece of paper with a pencil. 

The first player must draw the head of the monster. When he or she is done, the paper should be folded so that only something of the neck can be seen.

The next player must continue drawing and draw the shoulders and abdomen. Next, the paper must be folded again so that only the lower abdomen can be seen. The next player must continue to draw the monster, etc. You must continue until all the participants have had their turn to draw.

Who has not played this game before? A player must draw a certain number of lines so that they match the number of letters in a certain word that he or she wants to be guessed. If you want to make the game easier, you can fill in a few of the letters as clues.

The players who have to guess the word must take turns guessing different letters. If the letters are part of the word, that’s fine. If they are not, then the leader must draw a body part for each error…

The head, the body, one arm, the other arm, one leg and so on. When the human figure is complete, then the players have lost because they have run out of chances to guess the word.

Scattegories

This is a very fun game. At the top of the paper, horizontally make a row with different categories. For example, you can create a category with names, animals, cities, fruits, countries, colors, food, furniture, etc.

At the beginning of the game, one of the players must choose a letter, and then all players must think of a word in each category beginning with that letter. When a player has finished filling in all his categories, the game stops – even if the rest of the players are not finished yet. Next, each player must count his points together.

Each correct answer is worth 10 points. If several players have written the same word, then they get 5 points each. You can play as many rounds as you want. You just have to choose a new letter in each round. The player with the most points in the end wins.

As you can see, you can have fun at home with very few materials. These games with paper and pencil  provide children with many benefits on a cognitive level, in addition to being entertaining, through reasoning, strategy, accommodation, etc.
