Many women are upset about the changes that pregnancy causes on their body and cannot wait to get back in shape as soon as their baby is born.

However, considering going on a diet after pregnancy can give rise to a lot of questions, such as when to start.

After 9 months on a special diet,  new mothers often ask themselves what they should eat after giving birth. There are two reasons for this.

On the one hand, new mothers want to get back in shape, and lose the extra pounds they have gained during pregnancy. On the other hand, many women tend to go back to enjoying all the foods that they ate before they became pregnant – healthy or not.

For the first few months after your baby is born, there are certain irreplaceable dietary requirements. The most important are:

Calcium

Breastfeeding depletes the supply of calcium in your body. With that in mind, make sure your diet makes up for what you lose through your breast milk.

This means that you should have plenty of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Vitamin D helps your body absorb this vital mineral.

Iron

This is another mineral that your body may be missing. The fetus extracts iron from the mother’s blood as it grows in the womb. For this reason, it is very important for the new mother that she ingests certain foods.

Iron can be found in red meat, fruits, grains and legumes. Eat iron along with vitamin C, which helps with absorption.

Hydration

At this stage,  your body focuses on producing milk to feed your baby. This means that you need to drink plenty of fluids to reduce what you lose through breastfeeding.

Drinking water, natural, low-sugar juices and herbal teas are the best way you can stay hydrated.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as it will also help you stay hydrated. These foods are also important because they are rich in vitamins and minerals that both you and your baby need.

Remember that at this stage, your baby is still getting all of its nutrients from you.

When to start a cure after pregnancy

As you have discovered,  your diet, after birth, should provide you with the needs that both you and your baby have. 

With that in mind, the most important piece of advice is to follow the recommendations of the medical professionals who are responsible for both you and your baby’s care. That way, you will make sure that you are not going to lack any nutrients.

If you want to lose a few pounds after giving birth, there is no reason not to. Just make sure you are not going to lack any essential nutrients in your diet.

The best time to start a cure after pregnancy is about two months after birth. 

If you start before this, your calorie deficit may be hampering your body’s efforts to heal itself, after all it’s been through. Furthermore, you may experience hunger and lack of energy.

About 2 months after the birth is also a good time to start physical exercise. It is an irreplaceable part of a gradual, healthy weight loss.

While it is best to take it easy at first, over time your body will see and feel more like itself again.

Foods you should avoid

If, on the other hand, you can not wait to eat everything that you did not eat during your pregnancy, keep in mind that you still have to follow certain rules.

For example,  it is still important to avoid foods that are high in saturated fat, refined flour and sugar. If you eat these types of foods, do so in moderation and always follow your doctor’s instructions.

If you are breastfeeding, you still need to avoid alcohol. Likewise, stick to light meals. Your digestive system is still a bit sensitive and heavy foods can be problematic.

As a final recommendation, try to eat every 3 hours as your digestive system is still returning to normal.

If you need any medication, consult your doctor and follow the dosing instructions  to avoid indigestion.

Following a healthy diet after childbirth is important for your well-being and self-esteem. Just keep in mind that at this stage, you still have special nutritional needs.
